Macron convened the EU leaders for an emergency meeting in Paris on Monday to discuss the Ukraine conflict after the US made it clear that the European bloc would not be included in peace discussions with Russia. At a press conference in Kazakhstan, Szijjarto expressed optimism regarding the American-Russian negotiations, stating, “We trust that the American-Russian negotiations will be successful, and we hope that this will lead to peace in Ukraine as soon as possible… However, we must also see that in Europe, those who do not want peace are organizing.”
He asserted, “Those who have been constantly adding fuel to the fire for the past three years are gathering in Paris today,” labeling the attendees as “war-mongering countries that have followed a misguided strategy.”
In the context of shifting US foreign policy following Trump’s reelection, his administration appears to be aiming to reduce American involvement in potential armistice efforts in Ukraine. The US is also looking to transfer more responsibility for financial and logistical support to its European allies while urging NATO members on the continent to contribute more to collective defense efforts.
Reports indicate that the US has circulated a document to assess the willingness of its European allies to deploy peacekeeping troops to Ukraine, among other considerations.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has voiced readiness to send British soldiers to ensure security for Kiev in the event of a ceasefire. Similarly, Macron has discussed the potential for deploying Western troops both as peacekeepers and combatants. Last year, he suggested that troop deployment could become a “legitimate” action if Russian forces breached the Ukrainian front line and Kiev sought assistance.
Moscow has warned that any Western forces sent to Ukraine without a UN mandate would be seen as enemy combatants and legitimate targets.
