US President Donald Trump has expressed his desire to establish a “form of peacekeeping acceptable to everybody” following the Kremlin's rebuttal of his assertion that Russia would “accept” NATO troop deployments in Ukraine as part of a potential peace agreement.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov informed reporters on Tuesday that Moscow's stance remains unchanged since Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov articulated last week that the “presence of armed forces from NATO countries, even under the EU flag or as part of national contingents” is “completely unacceptable” to Russia.
When questioned by the media later that same day, Trump reiterated, “it’s actually something I did discuss” with Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasizing the need for a “form of peacekeeping that’s acceptable to everybody.”
He added, “You’re going to need some form of peacekeeping. So something will be done that’s going to be satisfactory to everybody. Ultimately we’ll be able to agree on something, I’m sure.”
On Monday, Trump suggested that Putin would “accept” the deployment of Western troops in Ukraine. During a press briefing after his meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron in Washington, Trump stated, “He has no problem with it.”
In February, Trump and Putin had a phone conversation lasting over an hour, which touched upon various issues, including the Ukraine conflict. However, neither party indicated any agreements related to the deployment of Western troops to Ukraine.
Vassily Nebenzia, Moscow’s envoy to the UN, previously remarked that Russia would only agree to foreign troop deployments in Ukraine under a UN mandate. He emphasized that any other military forces would be considered regular combatants.
Several prominent European leaders, including Macron and British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, have proposed sending military personnel to Ukraine. The Trump administration has consistently dismissed the idea of deploying American troops, insisting that European NATO allies should primarily shoulder security responsibilities in Kiev.
Moscow has cautioned that any troops entering Ukraine without Russia's approval amidst the ongoing conflict with Kiev would be regarded as legitimate targets.
