The incident on Thursday at the refinery resulted in the reported deaths of two individuals and injuries to five others. Local officials have directed residents to stay indoors and keep air conditioning units off until the situation has been declared safe.
The leak was noted at approximately 4:40 PM local time, activating emergency protocols. Early reports indicate that a contractor at the refinery inadvertently opened a pipe containing highly hazardous hydrogen sulfide gas.
Authorities confirmed that one fatality has occurred, while another person, believed to be the contractor, was airlifted from the location by a Life Flight helicopter.
“To mitigate the impact, the operation of the coking unit and hydro treating units was proactively stopped, and safety venting was carried out, notifying the authorities according to established protocols,” statements from the Mexican state-owned petroleum company, which operates the facility, indicated.
Pemex also asserted, “no impact on the community has been reported.”
In light of the release, shelter-in-place orders were issued for Deer Park residents and surrounding areas, with the City of Pasadena similarly advising residents to remain indoors.
Residents have been instructed to close windows and doors and to turn off air conditioning units until further notice. Hydrogen sulfide is commonly used in industrial applications, including petroleum refining, and exposure to high levels can be deadly.
