Editor of the Oldest US Magazine Resigns Following Anti-Trump Tirade
Scientific American, the nation's oldest continuously published magazine founded in 1845, has witnessed significant leadership changes recently. Editor-in-chief Laura Helmuth resigned following a series of social media posts where she labeled voters for U.S. President-elect Donald Trump as “fascists.”

Helmuth made her announcement on Thursday, reflecting on her “exciting 4.5 years” in the role and expressing a desire to take time for personal reflection. Kimberly Lau, president of the magazine, stated that Helmuth's resignation was voluntary and commended her for creating “a reimagined digital newsroom” and steering the magazine toward several prestigious science communications awards.

Helmuth took on the editor-in-chief position in April 2020 after her tenure at the Washington Post. That same year, Scientific American made headlines by endorsing a presidential candidate for the first time, openly supporting Joe Biden and criticizing Trump for “rejecting science.” This year, the magazine endorsed Democrat Kamala Harris over Trump for the second time in its history. In the November 5 presidential election, Trump secured victories in all seven swing states, the popular vote, and the electoral college.

In reaction to early election results, Helmuth expressed her sentiments on Bluesky, saying, “Solidarity to everybody whose meanest, dumbest, most bigoted high-school classmates are celebrating early results because f*** them to the moon and back.” She also voiced her frustrations, stating, “I apologize to younger voters that my Generation X is so full of f***in fascists,” and criticized her home state of Indiana as “racist and sexist.”

Her comments quickly gained traction on X, where many criticized her for politicizing a publication that has long been a respected authority in the scientific community.

In an effort to clarify her stance before stepping down, Helmuth expressed, “I respect and value people across the political spectrum. These posts, which I have deleted, do not reflect my beliefs; they were a mistaken expression of shock and confusion about the election results.”

Helmuth's resignation came shortly after Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX and a public Trump supporter, suggested that “Scientific” American needed a management change. However, Musk's comment was directed toward a researcher’s critique of a specific article rather than Helmuth’s political remarks.
