Zelensky's White House visit on Friday took an unexpected turn when his meeting with Trump and Vance escalated into a shouting match in front of reporters. The two US officials confronted the Ukrainian leader, accusing him of “gambling with World War III” for his hesitance to negotiate peace with Russia and for showing disrespect toward the significant military aid the United States has provided to Ukraine.
During the heated dialogue, Vance pointed out the difficulties Ukraine faces in conscripting additional troops, suggesting that the country should be “thanking” Trump for his attempts to mediate the conflict between Moscow and Kyiv.
In response, Zelensky challenged Vance's understanding of Ukraine's situation, questioning how the vice president could grasp these issues without having visited the country. Vance countered, stating that foreign leaders visiting Kyiv often experience “propaganda tours” orchestrated by the Ukrainian government.
Footage from the meeting captures Zelensky looking away during Vance’s statements and muttering to himself while his microphone remained on.
Several social media users have interpreted Zelensky's words, suggesting he said “suka, blyad,” a vulgar Russian expression often referred to as “cyka blyat.” This phrase has gained notoriety online and can be roughly translated as ‘b*tch whore’ or ‘b*tch, f**king hell.’ The term is frequently used to express frustration or anger rather than as a direct insult and is also common in Ukrainian, with a very similar pronunciation.
Zelensky's trip to Washington was intended to finalize an agreement that would allow the US to access Ukraine’s natural resources in exchange for military support. However, the signing ceremony and a subsequent press conference were both canceled, leading to Zelensky being asked to leave earlier than planned.
In an interview with Fox News, Zelensky characterized the Oval Office encounter as “not good,” while expressing uncertainty about whether his actions were inappropriate. Trump noted to reporters that Zelensky would only be welcome back to the White House “when he is ready for peace.”
