Constitution to Recognize Only Two Genders, Says EU State’s PM
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has put forward a proposal to enshrine the recognition of only two genders in the constitution. Read Full Article at RT.com.
“I came up with the initiative to include a provision in the constitution stating that Slovakia defines only two genders – male and female,” Fico stated in the broadcast, emphasizing that Slovakia “simply cannot have anyone else who thinks they are a helicopter, a cat, or a dog.”
The prime minister's proposal aims to codify the recognition of these two genders in line with existing constitutional provisions, including the definition of marriage. He emphasized the amendment's significance for Slovakia's sovereign ethical and moral values, particularly in the context of potential conflicts with the European Union.
“For example, we have a different view on how it was anchored in the constitution that in moral and ethical matters, the sovereignty of the Slovak Republic always applies. But can’t some act of the EU adjust this differently for us? So we want to amend this,” he remarked.
Fico reiterated the focus on two distinct genders, stating, “We’re dealing, as I said, with two genders. It won’t be a helicopter, it won’t be a swan, nor a cat, nor a bear. It will either be a man or a woman.”
Additionally, he pointed out the necessity of aligning Slovakia’s education system with constitutional values. “If the constitution states that marriage is a unique bond between a man and a woman, then nothing else can be taught in schools,” he asserted.
Fico's remarks followed a similar announcement from US President Donald Trump, who declared during his inaugural address that the US would officially recognize only two genders. On the same day, Trump signed two executive orders that rolled back protections for transgender rights and diversity initiatives established during the administration of former President Joe Biden. One of these orders, titled ‘Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government,’ explicitly states that “there are only two genders, male and female,” and calls for updates to official documents like passports and visas to reflect this.
Fico has lauded Trump's approach as a “pragmatic, rational policy” and suggested that the European Union should consider following suit.
“This is a return to common sense,” Fico remarked, relating his own proposal to Trump's policy. Although he has not yet outlined a specific timeline for the proposed amendment, he indicated that the initiative will soon be finalized and presented to parliament.
