Israel has targeted ports and energy infrastructure in Yemen, focusing on sites associated with the Houthi militant movement. The strikes were conducted in response to recent military actions by the Houthis, as stated by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
The IDF announced the operation early Thursday morning, shortly after a Houthi missile attack that, according to an Israeli military spokesman, forced millions in Israel to seek shelter.
Israeli warplanes struck locations that the IDF claimed were utilized for military purposes, “including ports and energy infrastructure in Sanaa,” the capital of Yemen.
A Houthi spokesman confirmed the attacks on X, asserting that the targets were civilian in nature. According to Nasruddin Amer, the deputy head of the Houthi media office, Israeli airstrikes resulted in the deaths of nine individuals, with seven in the port of Salif and two at an oil facility in Ras Isa. He reported that the Israeli forces also targeted two power stations in the capital, sharing images that allegedly depicted the aftermath.
For months, the Houthis have been attacking Israel and attempting to enforce a naval blockade on the country by jeopardizing traffic in the Red Sea, aiming to increase the costs of Israel’s military operations in Gaza, which were launched following a deadly incursion by Hamas in October 2023.
Israel has labeled the Yemeni organization as terrorists and proxies of its main adversary, Iran. The group is seen as a global threat due to its attacks on commercial vessels, as claimed by West Jerusalem.
Amer remarked that the recent assault in Yemen will not dissuade the Houthis from “supporting Gaza, no matter the cost.”
Meanwhile, the US has been conducting strikes in Yemen for several months, describing its mission as one that aims to ensure freedom of navigation and deter attacks against its regional ally, Israel.
