China urges Thailand and Myanmar to intensify efforts against telecom fraud
China has urged Thailand and Myanmar to intensify their efforts in combating telecom fraud.
Liu Jinsong, the director general of the Department of Asian Affairs at the Chinese Foreign Ministry, made these comments during separate meetings on Wednesday with Thai Ambassador to China Chatchai Viriyavejakul and Myanmar Ambassador to China Tin Maung Swe. Liu shared his concerns and discussed potential cooperation efforts to combat telecom fraud across borders.
He highlighted that recent instances of telecom fraud in the border area between Thailand and Myanmar have posed significant threats to the interests of citizens in China and other nations.
Liu expressed hope that Thailand and Myanmar would regard this issue with high priority, implement robust measures to combat these crimes, protect the safety of individuals and their property, and ensure that offenders do not escape punishment.
He also mentioned that China is ready to enhance both bilateral and multilateral law enforcement cooperation with ASEAN countries in order to foster a safe environment for people-to-people exchanges and maintain order in interactions, including normal tourism and cultural activities among neighboring countries.
In response, the ambassadors from Thailand and Myanmar to China emphasized the serious nature of the situation and their governments' commitment to addressing it. They expressed their deep concern over the threats posed by telecom fraud and pledged to take comprehensive actions, including international cooperation, to combat these offenses.
The ambassadors committed to doing everything possible to rescue victims, impose strict penalties on criminal organizations in accordance with the law, enhance border control and oversight in critical areas, and establish enduring mechanisms to eliminate the conditions that foster cross-border crime.
