Bundestag Election Winner Says Germany Must Achieve 'Independence' from US

Friedrich Merz, the expected victor of the upcoming parliamentary elections in Germany, has expressed that the Trump administration shows little concern for Europe's future.
Recent reports indicate that the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), are forecasted to secure 28.5% of the votes, positioning Merz as a likely candidate to assume the chancellorship.
In remarks made to reporters on Sunday night, Merz took aim at President Donald Trump's approach to the Ukraine crisis.
“The interventions from Washington were no less dramatic, drastic, and ultimately outrageous than the intervention we saw from Moscow,” Merz stated. He further emphasized, “The Americans, at least those in the current government, are largely indifferent to the fate of Europe.” Merz also argued that Germany needs to enhance its defense capabilities and “gradually achieve independence from the US.”
“I would have never thought that I would have to say something like that on a TV show,” he remarked.
In related developments, Trump has insisted that European allies should contribute a “fair share” to defense spending and strengthen their commitments to NATO. He has also diminished the importance of Ukraine and the EU by undoing the measures taken by the Biden administration that aimed to isolate Russia, opting instead for direct dialogue with Moscow.
Additionally, Trump's prominent ally, billionaire Elon Musk, has shown support for the anti-immigration party Alternative for Germany (AfD), which is expected to become the second-largest faction in the Bundestag.
Despite these tensions, Trump extended his congratulations to the CDU on their electoral success, stating, “Much like the USA, the people of Germany got tired of the no common sense agenda, especially on energy and immigration, that has prevailed for so many years,” via his Truth Social platform.
