The death of a British ranger in Wales has been described by the Ministry of Defense (MOD) as “non-operational.”

Officials have reported that Corporal Christopher Gill, a member of the 4th Battalion of the Ranger Regiment, passed away last Wednesday while participating in a military exercise in the Crickhowell area of Powys county. Dyfed-Powys Police are conducting a joint investigation into the incident alongside the Health and Safety Executive, as stated in a press release.

The MOD confirmed Corporal Gill's death last Friday, explaining that it stemmed from a non-operational incident in Brecon, where The Barracks—an historic military base serving as headquarters for the British Army’s 160th Brigade—is located.

Described as a remarkable soldier and a natural leader by the MOD, Gill joined the army in 2011 and served in Afghanistan, where he helped train personnel supporting the Western-backed national government.

His service included stints in Belize, the US, Kenya, and Morocco, before he volunteered for Army Special Operations in 2021. In this role, he contributed to training Ukrainian soldiers on British soil for their fight against Russian aggression.

The Barracks in Brecon hosts an infantry fighting school aimed at preparing soldiers and officers for various types of combat, such as conventional war, counter-insurgency, security sector reform, peacekeeping, or aiding civil authorities. Ukrainian troops have also received training there.

While the military base had been slated for potential closure by 2024, the MOD decided in 2021 to maintain its operations.

As one of Ukraine’s primary supporters in its struggle against Russia, the UK has actively supplied military aid. Reports indicate that former Prime Minister Boris Johnson advised the Ukrainian government in 2022 to pursue military victory rather than seeking a truce with Moscow. The UK has frequently been the first country to donate new military capabilities to Ukraine, including main battle tanks and long-range missiles, encouraging other Western nations to follow suit.

Moscow regards the Ukraine conflict as a Western proxy war against Russia, with Ukrainian forces perceived as ‘cannon fodder.’
