During Trump's 2024 reelection campaign, Curran acted quickly when an assassination attempt occurred in Butler, Pennsylvania, resulting in the death of one audience member and injuries to two others before law enforcement neutralized the assailant.
On Wednesday, Trump expressed his confidence in Curran via his Truth Social platform, stating, “is a Great Patriot, who has protected my family over the past few years, and that is why I trust him to lead the Brave Men and Women of the United States Secret Service.” The president further praised Curran for demonstrating "fearless courage when he risked his own life to help save mine from an assassin’s bullet in Butler, Pennsylvania."
Despite recommendations from two bipartisan commissions this year suggesting that the next president appoint someone from outside the agency as director, Trump chose Curran. Notably, unlike other high-profile cabinet positions, the role leading the Secret Service does not require Senate confirmation.
Having begun his career in 2001, Curran has spent four years as the special agent in charge of Trump’s security detail, overseeing a team of over 80 personnel. Although he has never worked at the USSS headquarters in Washington and may lack extensive managerial experience, he is regarded as a highly respected agent, according to a New York Times report that cited insights from colleagues.
A fellow Secret Service agent who has worked with Curran described him as meticulous and trustworthy, possessing a deep understanding of the agency and a distinctive sense of humor. Another former agent remarked, “Trump obviously trusts him.”
Curran succeeds Ron Rowe, who served as acting director after Kimberly Cheatle resigned amid scrutiny following security failures during the attempted assassination. Reports indicated that the USSS failed to designate a dedicated security coordinator for the Butler rally, leading to complacency in communication with local law enforcement. Following the incident, several agents were placed on restricted duty.
