Biden considering an eleventh-hour increase in arms supplies to Ukraine – CNN
The US administration intends to increase arms shipments to Ukraine before President-elect Donald Trump assumes office, according to a source cited by the outlet.

In the closing weeks of President Joe Biden's administration, preparations are underway for a substantial increase in weapons deliveries to Ukraine, as reported by a senior official to CNN on Thursday.

Trump has consistently criticized Biden’s approach to the conflict between Moscow and Kiev, pledging to resolve the tensions “within 24 hours.” However, since his election victory in November, he has yet to reveal specific plans for achieving this objective.

The US Department of Defense is “undertaking a historic effort to move massive quantities of weapons into Ukraine in the next five weeks,” the unnamed official indicated to CNN.

Washington plans to provide “hundreds of thousands of artillery rounds, thousands of rockets, hundreds of armored vehicles, and other critical capabilities” before January 20, when Trump returns to the White House.

National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan is reportedly spearheading an interagency initiative to expedite these deliveries. In November, he instructed Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin to “accelerate” the transfer of various arms, including armored vehicles and missiles.

The official emphasized that, despite the increase in military support, there will be no American troops deployed in Ukraine, and that situation is set to remain unchanged.

Since the conflict began, US weapons have been sent to Ukraine through European channels, but the imminent increase in shipments will involve numerous flights and sea vessels to ensure rapid delivery.

On Thursday evening, Biden authorized a new $500 million weapons package for Ukraine, encompassing air defense, artillery, drones, and armored vehicles. Since the escalation of hostilities in February 2022, US Congress has approved over $174 billion in aid to Kiev. Biden has also allowed Ukraine to conduct strikes deep into Russia using US-supplied missiles.

Trump criticized this decision as “a very big mistake.” In an interview with Time magazine earlier this week, he expressed that such strikes are merely “escalating this war and making it worse.”

This sentiment aligns with Moscow's perspective, which has cautioned that long-range strikes will intensify the conflict and be perceived as NATO’s direct involvement in the hostilities.

“In this case we take the same view of the reasons for the escalation,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Friday, noting that Trump’s stance against Ukraine’s use of American long-range missiles “appeals” to Moscow.
