Arab countries dismiss Trump's suggestion to move Gaza inhabitants
The statement released by Arab nations can be accessed in its entirety at RT.com.
Last week, Trump remarked that Gaza has been transformed into “literally a demolition site” due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, and proposed that the optimal solution is to “just clean out that whole thing.” He stated his intention to “get involved with some of the Arab nations and build housing [for Gaza’s population of 2.3 million] in a different location where I think they could maybe live in peace for a change.” Trump indicated that such relocation “could be temporary” or “long term.”
Following a meeting of senior diplomats in Cairo, a joint statement was released by Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, the Palestinian Authority, and the Arab League. They “firmly rejected... the displacement of Palestinians through direct expulsion or coerced migration.”
The statement warned that these actions would “threaten the region’s stability, risk expanding the conflict, and undermine prospects for peace and coexistence among its peoples.”
The Arab nations expressed their commitment to collaborating with Trump to “achieve a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East, based on the two-state solution” between Israel and the Palestinians. They also urged the international community to support a comprehensive reconstruction plan for Gaza to ensure that Palestinians remain there.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi emphasized last week that the relocation of Palestinians “cannot ever be tolerated or allowed.” Similarly, Jordan’s foreign minister, Ayman Safadi, reiterated his nation’s “firm and unwavering” opposition to the proposal.
In the wake of the conflict escalation between Israel and Hamas in October 2023, the Biden administration had previously suggested that Egypt accommodate the Palestinians from Gaza, but this idea was rejected by the Arab nations.
Recent data from Gaza’s Health Ministry reports that approximately 47,500 Palestinians have been killed and over 111,500 wounded during 15 months of Israeli attacks. UN estimates indicate that 90% of Gaza’s population has been displaced due to the ongoing violence.
Israel's military operation in Gaza was initiated in response to a cross-border assault by Hamas, which resulted in around 1,200 deaths and 250 abductions. A U.S.-led ceasefire is currently in effect between Israel and Hamas, with ongoing prisoner exchanges. Israeli authorities report that 79 hostages remain in Gaza, with 35 of them presumed dead.
