Anita Dunn Set to Leave White House
Her departure marks the first instance of someone from Biden's inner circle leaving following the downfall of his campaign.
Dunn is set to join Future Forward, the principal super PAC supporting Vice President Kamala Harris' presidential campaign.
Dunn stated, “I am grateful to President Biden and Vice President Harris for their leadership and giving me the opportunity to be part of what they have accomplished for the American people."
Previously instrumental in guiding Biden's 2020 campaign, Dunn briefly left the administration during its first year but returned later to manage communications strategies.
A seasoned strategist linked to numerous leading Democrats, Dunn is regarded as one of Biden's most trusted advisors. Her husband, Bob Bauer, serves as Biden's personal lawyer.
President Biden expressed his regard for Dunn, saying, "she’s tough and tested” and "her experience and intellect have helped us deliver historic results for the American people. I deeply value her counsel and friendship and I will continue to rely on her partnership and insights as we finish the job over the next six months."
Dunn's resignation follows Biden's challenging debate performance and his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race, although her move was somewhat anticipated once Harris emerged as the likely nominee. Shortly after Biden's announcement, Dunn emphasized the importance of supporting Harris in a staff call, noting the need to "focus on defending and protecting Vice President Kamala Harris, whom Biden had just endorsed," as reported by an attendee.
Dunn had also been involved in bolstering Harris' media and communications teams, a critical role particularly during the initial turbulent months of Biden’s presidency.
Lorraine Voles, the Chief of Staff for Harris, praised Dunn, writing, “She gives her all every day, and is a valued colleague to me and so many others on these 18 acres.”
This sentiment was reflected by additional White House staff including Chief of Staff Jeff Zients, Deputy Chief of Staff Bruce Reed, Communications Director Ben LaBolt, and others who similarly lauded Dunn's contributions and teamwork.
