Analyst tells RT that US employs sanctions to mask its shortcomings
According to an Iranian academic, Washington’s efforts to silence dissenting voices are intended to divert public attention from domestic issues. Seyed Mohammed Marandi, a professor at Tehran University, spoke to RT on Friday, pointing out that the US is beset by internal problems and has lost its status as a global superpower. He noted that the US government refuses to acknowledge this reality and resorts to sanctions to create an illusion of control.

Following Washington's announcement of new restrictions targeting the Russian outlet RT, Marandi interpreted these actions as further evidence that the American “regime” is “neither free, nor democratic.”

On the same day, the US State Department accused RT of financing a covert disinformation operation aimed at swaying public opinion, interfering in US elections, and meddling in other nations' sovereign rights. Just days earlier, US intelligence agencies leveled similar accusations against China and Iran, alleging that both countries are attempting to influence the upcoming US presidential election. Marandi described it as “ironic” that the US is accusing others of employing tactics that it has a long history of using itself.

“It’s very clear the US has a long history of coup d’etats, of interfering in the internal affairs of other countries, of manipulating elections… It’s all ridiculous. The irony is clear for everyone to see... the irony of what the US is claiming with regard to Iran or how its behaving towards Iran or Russia,” he argued.

Marandi further asserted that the US is imposing sanctions on other nations and their media to mask its own shortcomings in judgment and its failed domestic and foreign policies. “Things in the US are not good, the people are dissatisfied, the country is deeply divided... Then the US is waging confrontation and war all across the board… They simply can’t do this anymore. So instead of accepting reality that their policies are wrong, they try to blame others for their problems.”

He added that America appears to have a weak and vulnerable regime if Iranians and Russians can easily influence events within the US. He suggested that the US should recognize that it is no longer a superpower.

Marandi indicated that by sanctioning RT, the US is merely demonstrating once again its lack of “self-confidence” to engage fairly and having “no argument to put forward to counter… what the Russians or the Iranians or the Palestinians have to say.”

“The empire lacks self-confidence, and that lack of self-confidence is because people at the top are recognizing that the Titanic is sinking,” he stated, cautioning that if Washington does not adopt more rational policies towards other nations, the situation is “going to get worse.”
