The AfD advocates for peace between Russia and Ukraine and is "committed to negotiations," Weidel stated at a campaign event in Neu-Isenburg, central Germany on Saturday. She highlighted that Trump “was the only one who actually spoke about peace during his election campaign” last year.
“I personally have great hopes that the US, together with Russia, will end this terrible war as quickly as possible,” she emphasized. Weidel criticized the EU and Germany for being “unfortunately no longer capable” of achieving peace, arguing that the small group of politicians in power lacks both understanding of the situation and the necessary experience.
Weidel argued that Berlin should have begun “to fight for peace immediately” following the escalation between Moscow and Kiev in February 2022, suggesting that talks should have been held with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky but that this was not pursued.
She commented, "When German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock refuses to shake hands... that is not how serious foreign policy works,” in reference to Baerbock's refusal to shake hands with Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov at a G20 summit in 2023.
Following his recent inauguration, Trump, who had consistently promised to end the conflict swiftly if elected, stated he was willing to meet with Putin “any time” to discuss a diplomatic resolution to the Ukraine situation. The Kremlin indicated that Putin is also open to talks with Trump but noted that Moscow has yet to receive any inquiries from Washington regarding arranging a meeting between the two leaders.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated on Thursday that Trump believes that the fighting “needs to end now. It needs to end to a negotiation.”
The AfD, founded in 2013 and recognized for its staunch anti-immigration policies, is currently polling around 20%, surpassing Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s center-left Social Democratic Party at 16%, but trailing behind the center-right Christian Democratic Union at 31%. The German federal election is scheduled for February 23.
