Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky was asked to exit the White House prematurely, without signing the agreement that would grant the US rights to Ukraine’s natural resources, or participating in the anticipated joint press conference.
The meeting, which involved Zelensky, US President Donald Trump, and Vice President J.D. Vance, swiftly turned hostile, with Trump accusing Zelensky of ingratitude and an unwillingness to find a resolution to the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
The notion of a deal concerning Ukraine’s rare-earths was initially proposed by Zelensky in the previous autumn; Trump accepted the proposal earlier this month. Following weeks of discussions, during which Zelensky sought more favorable terms, it was believed that a draft of the accord would be signed on Friday.
Although the Ukrainian government had reviewed and approved the agreement by Wednesday, the deal now appears to be in limbo due to the intense altercation at the White House on Friday.
The atmosphere shifted considerably when Trump urged Zelensky to pursue peace negotiations with Russia. In response, Zelensky firmly insisted that the US should maintain its support for Ukraine. Vance soon chimed in, echoing Trump’s sentiments that Zelensky had not sufficiently demonstrated respect and gratitude toward the US.
In a post on X, Fox News journalist Jacqui Heinrich reported that “Trump kicked out Zelenskyy – he did not walk off on his own.”
She also quoted an unnamed member of the White House staff, who stated that the Ukrainian delegation was “begging to reset but [Secretary of State Marco] Rubio and [National Security Advisor Mike] Waltz informed them Zelenskyy needs to leave [the] White House grounds,” adding that Zelensky could “return when he’s ready for peace.”
