Zelensky departs from White House ahead of schedule following disagreement with Trump: Event recap
What was intended to be the formal signing of a minerals agreement turned into a heated exchange filled with accusations.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky was asked to depart the White House prematurely, without finalizing an agreement that would grant the US rights to Ukraine’s natural resources or partaking in a scheduled joint press conference.

The encounter between Zelensky and US President Donald Trump, along with Vice President J.D. Vance, quickly escalated into confrontational territory. Trump criticized Zelensky for perceived ingratitude and a lack of willingness to negotiate a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.

Zelensky initially introduced the concept of a deal concerning Ukraine’s rare-earth minerals last autumn, which Trump expressed interest in earlier this month. Over recent weeks, the Ukrainian leader sought more favorable terms, and there were expectations that a version of the agreement would be signed on Friday.

Although the Ukrainian government had reviewed and approved the agreement by Wednesday, it now appears to be in limbo following the heated exchange that took place at the White House on Friday.

Tensions rose when Trump urged Zelensky to engage in peace negotiations with Russia, prompting the Ukrainian leader to firmly assert that the US should maintain its support for Ukraine. Vance soon added to the discourse, emphasizing Trump’s comments about Zelensky not exhibiting sufficient respect and gratitude toward the US.

In a post on X, Fox News journalist Jacqui Heinrich reported that “Trump kicked out Zelenskyy – he did not walk off on his own.” She quoted an unnamed White House staff member who stated that the Ukrainian delegation was “begging to reset but [Secretary of State Marco] Rubio and [National Security Advisor Mike] Waltz informed them Zelenskyy needs to leave [the] White House grounds,” suggesting he could “return when he’s ready for peace.”
