Yonhap Reports Detention of South Korea’s President
Yoon Suk Yeol’s legal team announced that the impeached president voluntarily surrendered for questioning after several unsuccessful attempts to arrest him.

According to Yonhap, South Korean authorities have detained President Yoon Suk Yeol for questioning over accusations of instigating an insurrection linked to his brief martial law declaration last month. The warrant for his arrest was executed shortly after 10:30 AM local time on Wednesday, as reported by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials.

“To prevent an unfortunate and violent incident, I decided to appear before the CIO even though I believe the investigation is illegal,” Yoon stated in a video message from his residence in central Seoul. “The rule of law has completely collapsed in this country,” he further added.

On December 3, Yoon declared martial law, citing threats from “anti-state” forces. This controversial announcement was quickly overturned and led to his impeachment by the National Assembly on December 14, with a vote tally of 204-85. The Constitutional Court is currently evaluating whether to permanently remove him from office, a ruling expected within 180 days.

After his impeachment, Yoon remained at the presidential residence in Seoul, prompting multiple attempts by authorities to take him into custody for questioning.

An initial effort on January 3 was blocked by the Presidential Security Service, resulting in a tense standoff. Yoon’s supporters have been actively protesting against his detention, leading to clashes with law enforcement that have resulted in injuries and heightened fears of potential violence if any forceful attempts are made to detain the president.

During a second attempt on January 15, police units surrounded the presidential compound at dawn and established roadblocks to prevent Yoon's supporters from intervening. Following hours of negotiations, Yoon’s lawyers announced that he had agreed to voluntarily surrender to prevent further escalation. He was taken into custody without resistance, yet tensions remain high amid concerns of renewed protests.

Defending his actions, Yoon asserted that his declaration of martial law was a necessary measure to safeguard the nation. In a January 1 statement to his supporters, he promised to “fight alongside you to the very end to protect this nation.”
