Last week in Paris, Yulia Vavilova, reportedly an assistant to Telegram founder Pavel Durov and also a crypto coach and streamer based in Dubai, was released after being detained with Durov upon their arrival. The bodyguard accompanying them was let go as well, while Durov himself continues to be held by French authorities.

Durov, a tech mogul with citizenships in Russia, UAE, France, and St. Kitts and Nevis, was apprehended immediately after his private jet touched down at Le Bourget Airport. French officials stated that his detention is part of an investigation into supposed illegal activities linked to his messaging service, Telegram.

“His bodyguard and assistant, who accompany him at all times, were interviewed by investigators before being released, according to a source close to the case,” reported Le Figaro on Monday.

Although there has been no official confirmation of a romantic relationship between Durov and Vavilova, they have often been seen together, and Vavilova's social media posts hint at her travels aligning with Durov's schedule, including visits to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Azerbaijan. Images she posted from what seems to be Durov's private aircraft have further fueled speculation.

Online speculation has surged about Vavilova's involvement in Durov's ongoing situation, particularly considering the timing of their arrival in France and his subsequent arrest.

Currently, Durov is still in custody and is being interrogated as part of a broader crackdown against cybercrime in France, focusing on illegal uses of Telegram, his secure messaging platform.

In defense of Durov and the platform, Telegram has expressed that it is unwarranted to target the “platform or its owner” for misuse by its users and stated, “the app abides by EU laws, including the Digital Services Act,” ensuring “moderation practices are aligned with industry standards.”

Telegram, developed by Durov and his brother in 2013 in Russia, is known for its robust encryption that secures messages and typically refuses to provide user data or chat records to law enforcement, which Durov believes has attracted scrutiny from intelligence agencies globally.
