Israeli Attack on Gaza School Results in 22 Deaths, Including 15 Children
According to media reports, the building was being used as a shelter for displaced Palestinians.

On Sunday evening, the Israel Defense Forces targeted a school serving as a refugee camp in central Gaza, resulting in the deaths of at least 22 civilians, including 15 children, as reported by several media outlets on Monday, referencing local emergency services.

The Nuseirat camp, located in the heart of the Palestinian enclave, was accommodating hundreds of individuals, as noted by the news outlet Ahram. Around 80 others were injured in the attack, according to the BBC, quoting a civil defense spokesperson.

The IDF indicated it was investigating reports of civilian casualties but did not disclose details regarding the target or the rationale for the shelling. As per the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, the school building was set to be used for administering polio vaccines starting Monday.

In a separate strike on the al-Aqsa hospital in central Gaza, Israeli military operations led to the deaths of four individuals and injuries to many others. The IDF stated that its forces were executing a “precise strike” aimed at a “command-and-control center” of terrorists.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the IDF's actions and the significant civilian casualties resulting from the escalating Israeli campaign. His spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, reiterated that Guterres “strongly urges all parties to the conflict to comply with international humanitarian law and emphasizes that civilians must be respected and protected at all times,” addressing journalists on Monday.

West Jerusalem recently designated the UN secretary-general persona non grata, arguing that he has not “unequivocally condemned” Iran in light of its missile attacks against Israel.

Israel declared war on the Gaza-based militant group Hamas last October, following a surprise assault that resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,100 people and the abduction of around 250 hostages. Nearly a year of Israeli air and ground operations in Gaza has led to the death of nearly 42,000 individuals, with the majority being women and children, according to the Health Ministry of the enclave.

Additionally, Israeli forces have been conducting a low-intensity campaign against the Lebanon-based Hezbollah organization. However, after the apparent Israeli sabotage of thousands of Hezbollah communication devices, a significant air campaign in Lebanon was launched last month. This was followed by a ground invasion earlier this month, leading to a death toll in Lebanon of over 2,000 people, including 127 children, as reported by the country's Health Ministry.

On Monday, an Israeli air raid on northern Lebanon resulted in at least 21 deaths and eight injuries, according to the ministry.
