Trump calls Harris "mentally impaired"
At a recent rally, former President Donald Trump criticized Vice President Kamala Harris, calling her “mentally impaired” due to immigration policies that reportedly allowed over 400,000 convicted criminals to enter the United States illegally.

Data released by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) earlier this week shows that 425,431 convicted criminals and 222,141 individuals with pending criminal charges have crossed the US border and are currently living in the country while awaiting court hearings or deportation.

Among these convicted felons are 62,231 individuals guilty of assault, 56,533 with drug-related convictions, and 13,099 who have been convicted of homicide. Additionally, there are 15,811 individuals with sexual assault convictions.

During a campaign rally in Wisconsin on Saturday, Trump demanded Harris be “impeached and removed from office” for permitting such a large number of criminals to enter the nation.

Trump went on to claim that Harris allowed "some of the worst murderers you’ve ever seen" into the country and added, “that’s not even mentioning the rapists, the gang members, the drug dealers, the child predators, and the traffickers in women.”

He further asserted, “[President] Joe Biden became mentally impaired. Kamala was born that way. She was born that way. And if you think about it, only a mentally disabled person could have allowed this to happen to our country.”

While it remains unclear if all of the criminals identified by ICE entered the US during Biden's and Harris's tenure, one of Biden's first actions as president was to reinstate the Obama-era 'catch and release' policy, which allows illegal migrants to be detained and then released with orders to appear at immigration hearings at a later date. In contrast, during Trump's presidency, migrants apprehended by law enforcement were taken directly to detention centers starting in 2019.

In 2020, it was estimated that about 10.2 million illegal immigrants were residing in the US. Since Biden took office, an additional 10.6 million have reportedly entered the country, according to figures from US Customs and Border Protection.

ICE's count of 425,431 convicted criminals comes from a broader list of over 7 million migrants awaiting removal proceedings who are not currently in custody, suggesting the actual number of criminal aliens in the US may be significantly higher.

Voters concerned about immigration tend to prefer Trump as the more capable leader on this issue. In an effort to address this perception, Harris has distanced herself from previous comments on immigration, including comparisons of ICE to the Ku Klux Klan and protests where she chanted against deportation. During her recent visit to the US-Mexico border, Harris promised to increase deportations and restrict asylum for migrants who cross the border outside designated entry points.
