A group of Republican lawmakers has restarted efforts to pull the US out of the United Nations, asserting that the organization betrays American interests and misuses taxpayer funds.
As a founding member of the UN, the US holds a permanent seat on the Security Council, which is responsible for conflict resolution and peacekeeping, and hosts the UN headquarters in New York. Senator Mike Lee introduced a bill on Thursday to sever ties with the UN, with support from Senators Marsha Blackburn and Rick Scott. A similar bill has also been introduced in the House by Representatives Mike Rogers and Chip Roy.
If passed, the legislation would eliminate the legal framework for US participation in the UN, stop all financial contributions, prohibit American involvement in UN peacekeeping operations, and cut connections with various UN agencies. The proposal stipulates strict conditions for any future engagement.
Lee voiced his disapproval of “blank checks” that allow American taxpayer dollars to fund initiatives that “fly in the face of our values, enabling tyrants, betraying allies, and spreading bigotry.”
Blackburn supported these views, accusing the UN of “placating Hamas terrorists and the Chinese Communist Party.” This comes in the wake of Hamas's deadly incursion into Israel in October 2023, which sparked a new wave of violence in the Middle East.
This latest proposal continues the aims and provisions of Lee’s previous bill from December 2023. Legislative attempts to cut US engagement with the UN have a long history, dating back as far as 1997, when then-Representative Ron Paul championed similar initiatives.
Earlier this month, President Donald Trump issued an executive order targeting three UN agencies that his administration deemed “anti-American.” These agencies included the UN Human Rights Council, the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, and the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
Trump withdrew the US from the UNHRC, defunded the UNRWA, and began a review of relations with UNESCO, claiming that these organizations act against US interests and contribute to anti-Semitism—criticisms that echo Israel’s allegations against those institutions.
