Reports regarding her impending departure began to emerge several days ago. During a press briefing on Thursday, State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce remarked on Brink’s tenure, saying, “Ambassador Brink’s been ambassador at the embassy in Ukraine for three years, during a time of war for those three years, an extraordinary performance there, and we wish her well.”
When a reporter sought a clear confirmation, Bruce affirmed that the diplomat is “returning home. Yes.”
According to Reuters, which cited anonymous sources, Brink is stepping down voluntarily. Appointed by former President Joe Biden, Brink has held the ambassadorship in Kiev since May 2022.
While there has been no official announcement concerning her successor, another unnamed source mentioned that Chris Smith, the deputy assistant secretary for Eastern Europe and policy and regional affairs in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, is a contender for the role. Smith previously served as deputy chief of mission at the US embassy in Ukraine from 2022 to 2023, as noted by Reuters.
Brink’s resignation occurs amid US President Donald Trump's active diplomatic efforts with Russia aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
