UK Intelligence Services Reject Internship Applications from White Students
**Only Ethnic Minorities Can Apply for Work Experience at MI5, MI6, and GCHQ**

The UK's intelligence agencies face allegations of “overt racism” as they implement a policy that excludes white British students from their summer internship programs. The agencies maintain that their approach is “lawful” and aims to draw individuals from “under-represented groups” into the field of intelligence.

MI5, MI6, and GCHQ, which includes Britain’s cyber-commandos, provide students with the opportunity to engage in “at the heart of national security” through 11-week internships each year. Interns at MI5 will have the chance to “investigate and disrupt international terrorism,” while those at MI6 will be part of “our exciting mission teams.” Meanwhile, GCHQ interns will “use bespoke technology” to analyze phone and internet records.

However, next year’s internships will be accessible exclusively to ethnic minorities from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The advertisement specifies that eligible candidates include “black, black British, Asian or Asian British, Mixed-Heritage” individuals or members of “other ethnic minority groups.” The sole white applicants permitted are those from “other white” categories, including “Romany Gypsy, Scottish or Irish Travellers.”

Applicants must also have been raised in households where the primary income earner was either a tradesperson, a casual or service employee, or unemployed.

Conservative MP Chris Philp criticized the advertisement, stating, “I understand the need to encourage applications from a wide range of backgrounds. But this is an overtly racist policy and it should be immediately discontinued.”

In response to the controversy, a spokesperson for MI5, MI6, and GCHQ asserted that the program is “a lawful measure used by the intelligence agencies to encourage people from under-represented groups to consider careers with our organizations.”

While interns complete the 11-week program, they are not guaranteed employment afterward; they will need to “compete against all other candidates in external recruitment processes” for any subsequent full-time positions, the spokesperson added.

A similar initiative was previously adopted by Britain’s Royal Air Force, which prioritized female and minority recruits over “useless white male pilots,” as described in a leaked email. This led to the resignation of a senior official in protest and resulted in an inquiry that found the RAF had illegally discriminated against white men, ultimately ordering the organization to compensate 31 individuals who were adversely affected by this policy.
