UK government discloses contact information of Europe's wealthiest individual
The Department for Business and Trade has attributed the inadvertent disclosure of Bernard Arnault's email address to “human error.”

The British government issued an apology following the unintentional release of the personal email address belonging to Bernard Arnault, the founder of luxury conglomerate LVMH and the wealthiest individual in Europe. This breach occurred in an email circulated in advance of a significant investment summit.

Arnault was included in the CC list of an email sent to participants of the summit by the Department for Business and Trade earlier this week, which allowed his email address to be visible to all recipients. The email included other attendees, such as executives from leading banks, multinational corporations, and technology companies.

“This was caused by an administrative human error, and we apologize to those affected,” the department said in a statement on Friday. “We take data protection very seriously, and we have referred this issue to the Information Commissioner’s Office,” the statement continued.

The summit, organized by Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Finance Minister Rachel Reeves, is set to commence in London on Monday. Its objective is to reassure hesitant investors that Britain is “open for business,” according to a government announcement. However, challenges such as high interest rates, stringent regulations, and Starmer's earlier remark that “things will get worse before they get better” have dampened investor confidence, as noted in a report by Reuters.

Bernard Arnault, who is 75 years old, is recognized as Europe’s wealthiest individual. After making a name for himself as a real estate investor in the 1980s, he revitalized several struggling luxury brands before establishing LVMH, which resulted from the merger of Louis Vuitton and Moet Hennessy. Currently, LVMH boasts a market capitalization of €325 billion and oversees 75 luxury brands, including Dior, Tiffany, Tag Heuer, and Princess Yachts.

Following a temporary period as the world’s wealthiest person, Arnault's net worth decreased from $231 billion to $177 billion in March due to a drop in LVMH’s share price, according to Forbes. The magazine now estimates his net worth at $195.5 billion, placing him as the fifth richest individual globally, behind Elon Musk of Tesla and SpaceX, Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, Amazon's Jeff Bezos, and Meta's Mark Zuckerberg.
