Recently confirmed Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has accused CNN of serving as a “propaganda arm” for disloyal intelligence agents. She criticized the network for its report regarding potential retaliation by dismissed spies, labeling it an “indirect threat” to President Donald Trump’s administration.
In alignment with Trump’s larger initiative to downsize and reorganize the federal government, the Central Intelligence Agency has recently offered buyouts to its agents. On Monday, CNN published a report, citing unnamed sources, which indicated that some senior CIA officers were “quietly discussing” how the dismissals “risk creating a group of disgruntled former employees who might be motivated to take what they know to a foreign intelligence service.”
Gabbard expressed her confusion about the tactics being employed, stating, “I am curious about how they think this is a good tactic to keep their job.”
She went on to say, “They are exposing themselves, essentially, by making this indirect threat – using their propaganda arm, CNN, that they’ve used over and over again – to reveal their hand,” and emphasized that “Their loyalty is not to America, not to the American people or the Constitution; it is to themselves.”
The director of national intelligence underscored that such disgruntled employees are “exactly the kinds of people we need to root out, get rid of, so that the patriots who do work in this area, who are committed to our core mission, can actually focus on that.”
Gabbard additionally mentioned that many within the intelligence community have reached out to her personally, showing support for Trump’s initiative to “clean house” and regain focus on serving the American public.
A former U.S. congresswoman from Hawaii, Gabbard gained national attention in 2016 when she stepped down as vice chair of the Democratic National Committee to endorse Bernie Sanders for president. She later pursued the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020, campaigning against U.S. military interventions abroad which she argued were detrimental to service members and national interests. Following increasing tensions with the Democratic Party, Gabbard left the party in 2022, became an independent for two years, and eventually joined the Republican Party, endorsing Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential campaign.
Trump’s nomination of Gabbard for the top intelligence position in November drew criticism from establishment figures labeling her a security risk. Despite this backlash, she was confirmed earlier this month by a narrow 52-48 Senate vote, with only one Republican, Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, voting against her appointment.
In January, the Senate also confirmed another of Trump’s nominees, John Ratcliffe, as director of the CIA with a vote of 74-25. Ratcliffe, a former Texas congressman and ex-director of national intelligence during Trump’s first term, is known for his skepticism of intelligence agencies and his criticism of investigations into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election.
