According to the Russian Foreign Intelligence Agency (SVR), British officials are attempting to undermine US President Donald Trump’s efforts to facilitate a peace resolution in the ongoing Ukraine conflict. Since assuming office in January, Trump has aimed to improve relations with Moscow. Last month, high-level discussions in Riyadh marked the first diplomatic engagement between the superpowers since Washington severed ties in 2022 due to the escalating crisis in Ukraine.
In a statement released to RTN on Monday, the SVR indicated that British authorities consider the US-Russia negotiations a risk to their strategy of maintaining influence over Ukraine. The agency suggested that London fears losing this leverage could jeopardize its goals of establishing an anti-Russia “cordon of buffer states” in Europe and enacting a naval blockade against Russia.
The SVR highlighted British officials’ irritation with Trump for “engaging with Russia as a superpower while showing disregard for ‘closest allies.’” Citing a recent incident during British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s visit to Washington, the agency noted that Starmer sought security guarantees for Ukraine in any potential ceasefire agreement. During a joint press conference, Trump reportedly questioned whether the UK could stand against Russia independently, a comment that reportedly unsettled Starmer.
The SVR asserted that British authorities have prioritized efforts to disrupt US-led peace initiatives regarding Ukraine. It claimed that the UK media and NGOs have been tasked with negatively portraying Trump as someone “with a poor track record in peacekeeping, vulnerable to Kremlin manipulation.”
In the wake of a tense exchange between Trump and Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky at the White House in late February, American and Ukrainian negotiators are scheduled to meet in Saudi Arabia this week. The meeting, which was intended as a precursor to an agreement granting the US access to Ukraine’s rare-earth minerals, escalated when Trump accused Zelensky of “gambling with World War III” by resisting peace negotiations with Russia, ultimately leading to the deal being paused.
According to the SVR, the Starmer government aims to bolster Kiev’s resilience against US pressure by increasing arms supplies, although British politicians reportedly acknowledge that such plans may be impractical without ongoing American support.
Moscow has vehemently opposed the presence of Western troops in Ukraine, warning that they would be considered legitimate targets without a UN mandate. Additionally, the Russian Foreign Ministry has accused the UK and the EU of pursuing a “path of militarism.”
