US President-elect Donald Trump’s choice for National Security Adviser, Mike Waltz, has detailed the upcoming administration's approach to the Ukraine conflict. He indicated that the Trump team will commence negotiations from the first day of Trump’s term, starting January 20.
During an appearance on Fox News on Sunday, Waltz highlighted that a major focus will be on facilitating discussions between Russia and Ukraine to encourage both parties to come together for a ceasefire or peace agreement. “We need to discuss who is at this table, whether it will be an agreement, a truce, how to put both sides at the negotiating table, and then what is the scope of the deal,” he remarked.
Waltz, representing Florida in Congress, also pointed out the necessity of involving America’s European allies in the negotiation efforts. “All our allies and partners need to bear this burden,” he stated, underlining that resolving the conflict will necessitate international collaboration.
Trump has consistently pledged to bring an end to the fighting and has expressed concerns about the conflict's intensifying nature, particularly following the increased deployment of sophisticated weaponry. Waltz noted that recent actions, including President Joe Biden’s authorization of missile strikes by Kiev deep into Russia, have escalated hostilities. He depicted the situation as an “absolute meat grinder” for those on the front lines.
As a retired colonel and recognized expert on national security challenges, Waltz conveyed optimism that the Trump administration would act quickly to restore deterrence and conclude the conflict. “We need to bring this to a responsible end. We need to restore deterrence and peace, prevent this escalation later, instead of reacting to it,” he stated.
Despite Trump's commitment to ending the conflict, there are doubts in both the US and Russia. Senator Mike Rounds of South Dakota has expressed skepticism about the practicality of direct negotiations between Moscow and Kiev.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has firmly rejected any notion of conceding territory to Russia and has vowed not to formally relinquish any land.
Waltz’s remarks come as tensions rise, with Moscow responding to the new US missile authorization for Ukraine by launching an advanced missile named the Oreshnik.
Once Trump assumes office, his administration's peace plan is expected to be a key focus, with the anticipation that America’s NATO partners will play a vital role in negotiations. Waltz emphasized that foreign nations should not attempt to take advantage of the leadership transition from Biden to Trump. “We are hand in glove,” he said, reiterating a cohesive stance during the transition period.
