Poll finds that most Americans back Trump's plans for mass deportation
The incoming president has indicated a plan to declare a national emergency to expedite the removal of illegal aliens.

According to a CBS News poll, 57% of Americans support President-elect Donald Trump’s intention to deport every undocumented immigrant in the country. In contrast, Democratic mayors and governors have committed to opposing the incoming president’s initiatives.

Released on Sunday, the poll revealed a general sense of approval regarding Trump’s victory over Vice President Kamala Harris in the recent presidential election, with 55% of participants expressing that they felt “happy” or “satisfied” with the outcome, while 44% felt “angry” or “dissatisfied.”

The survey also highlighted that 57% of respondents back one of Trump’s most contentious proposals: the deportation of all immigrants illegally residing in the U.S., while 43% oppose the policy.

Trump has maintained since last year that, if elected, he would lead “the largest deportation operation in American history.” With estimates of between 11 million and 35 million illegal immigrants currently in the U.S., Trump's suggested border czar, Tom Homan, stated that deportation efforts would prioritize individuals who commit crimes or pose security threats.

Furthermore, the president-elect signaled before the election his intention to invoke the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to “remove all known or suspected gang members, drug dealers, or cartel members from the United States.” This legislation grants the president the power to bypass immigration courts, though critics argue that it is applicable only during wartime against a foreign government and cannot be used for addressing transnational gangs.

Recently, Trump shared an article through his Truth Social platform indicating he would declare a national emergency and “use military assets to reverse the [President Joe] Biden invasion through a mass deportation program.”

The CBS poll findings also revealed that 82% of participants would like Trump to utilize immigration and border patrol agencies for deportations, with 40% supporting the involvement of the U.S. military.

Harris has consistently criticized Trump’s deportation strategies on the campaign trail, asserting that they would “tear families apart.” In a statement to CBS last month, Homan refuted this concern, affirming that “families can be deported together.”

Several Democratic mayors and governors have vowed to oppose any deportation efforts. Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey declared that she would “absolutely not” permit state police to assist federal immigration agents, while New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy commented that his administration would take any “action we deem to be necessary” to block Trump’s initiatives.

“If you’re not going to help us, get the hell out of the way because we’re going to do it,” Homan stated during an earlier interview with Fox News.
