The White House released the text of the order, titled “Restoring Names That Honor American Greatness.” According to the document, the renaming initiative is focused on promoting American heritage. Trump previously revealed these changes in his inaugural speech on the same day.
“The naming of our national treasures, including breathtaking natural wonders and historic works of art, should honor the contributions of visionary and patriotic Americans in our Nation’s rich past,” the executive order states.
Mount Denali in Alaska will revert to its former name, Mount McKinley, a title it held from 1917 until 2015, when then-US President Barack Obama restored its original native name. The name "McKinley" honors the 25th US President William McKinley, who presided over the US during the Spanish-American War in 1898. This conflict culminated in a peace treaty in which Spain ceded Cuba, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines to the United States. Additionally, Hawaii was annexed during this period, expanding US territory; however, McKinley never set foot in Alaska.
The executive order also changes the official designation of the Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America.” The document describes the gulf as “an integral asset” of the nation and “an indelible part of America,” while emphasizing that its natural resources and wildlife “remain central” to the national economy.
Trump’s slogan “Make America Great Again,” first introduced during his 2016 presidential campaign, has been a fundamental aspect of his recent political efforts. The new executive order underscores “American greatness” in its title, framing the restoration of historical names within Trump’s broader vision of national pride.
These renaming actions are part of several executive orders signed by Trump on Monday, which also include a ban on government officials infringing on freedom of speech under the pretense of combating misinformation, a rollback of protections for transgender rights, and a suspension of foreign aid.
