Orban Claims: US to Abandon Ukraine
President-elect Donald Trump is set to pull the United States out of the Ukraine conflict, putting European Union leaders in an "uncomfortable and difficult position," according to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

“The situation on the front line is obvious. It’s a military defeat. The Americans will get out of this war,” he stated during an interview with Kossuth Radio on Friday. “Europe alone cannot finance this war.”

Orban pointed out that while some EU leaders still advocate for continued financial support for what he views as a lost cause, their voices are becoming less prominent. He noted an increasing call among others for a reassessment of policy regarding the conflict.

The few nations, such as Hungary, Slovakia, and the Vatican, that have been advocating for de-escalation and dialogue, have been justified in their approach, he added.

Orban’s expectations regarding a shift in US foreign policy arise following Trump's recent election victory. The Republican has previously asserted his ability to resolve the Ukraine conflict within 24 hours.

Following Trump's win, the Hungarian leader anticipates significant global changes, remarking that the outcome was so substantial that “it can be seen not only from the Moon, but also from Mars.”

According to Orban, politicians who have been championing a Ukrainian victory find themselves in a difficult position, although they were aware that such an outcome was a possibility. Earlier this year, he engaged in what he termed a “peace mission,” meeting with various stakeholders in the conflict, traveling to Kiev, Moscow, and Beijing, as well as engaging with both President Joe Biden and Donald Trump on the issue.

Budapest sent a report to other EU member states, advising them to brace for a shift in the Ukraine situation, emphasizing that “there is no reason for any leader to say that they were surprised,” according to Orban.

“The biggest problem in Europe right now is that they don’t talk to those who need to be talked to,” he remarked. “This is a luxury one cannot afford in politics.”

Orban faced criticism from some EU leaders regarding his diplomatic efforts, which they viewed as taking a pro-Russian stance. They accused him of misusing Hungary’s rotating presidency of the EU by giving the impression he was acting on behalf of Brussels. The prime minister clarified that he was solely representing Hungary.
