Trump Proposes Musk as Leader for Newly Formed U.S. Government Department
Business tycoons Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy will spearhead a new Department of Government Efficiency during President-elect Donald Trump's anticipated second term, as announced by Trump.

“Together, these two wonderful Americans will pave the way for my Administration to dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure federal agencies,” Trump stated on Tuesday.

Musk expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “this will send shockwaves through the system, and anyone involved in Government waste, which is a lot of people!”

The new department is described in the announcement as potentially becoming “’The Manhattan Project’ of our time,” drawing a parallel to the historic WWII program that produced the first atomic bomb.

While Trump mentioned that Musk will head DOGE while “working in conjunction” with Ramaswamy, he did not clarify their specific roles within the agency.

In September, Trump had previously committed to appointing Musk to a “government efficiency commission tasked with conducting a complete financial and performance audit of the entire federal government, and making recommendations for drastic reforms.”

Musk, recognized as the world's richest individual and known for his leadership of SpaceX, Tesla, and X, endorsed Trump shortly after a botched assassination attempt in July, and he actively campaigned for him leading up to the November 5 election.

Following the announcement on Tuesday, Musk posted on X, “Threat to democracy? Nope, threat to BUREAUCRACY!!!”

Ramaswamy, founder of the pharmaceutical firm Roivant Sciences, previously sought the Republican nomination for the 2024 presidential election but ultimately withdrew and endorsed Trump.
