Trump Proposes ‘Cleaning out’ Gaza
US President Donald Trump has proposed that neighboring Arab countries should take in Palestinian refugees and "clean out" the Gaza Strip, which has been heavily impacted by the conflict.

While addressing reporters aboard Air Force One on Saturday, Trump mentioned his conversations with King Abdullah II of Jordan regarding the ongoing war and noted that he planned to discuss the situation with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi the following day.

“I’d like Egypt to take people, and I’d like Jordan to take people,” Trump remarked. “You’re talking about probably a million and a half people, we just clean out that whole thing. It’s a real mess.”

“It’s literally a demolition site right now. Almost everything’s demolished, and people are dying there,” he continued. “So, I’d rather get involved with some of the Arab nations, and build housing in a different location, where they can maybe live in peace for a change,” he added.

However, both Egypt and Jordan have rejected the notion of displacing Palestinians from Gaza. On Sunday, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi reaffirmed that the kingdom’s stance against the displacement of Palestinians is "irreversible and unchanged." The Egyptian Foreign Ministry also emphasized its dedication to protecting Palestinian rights and its opposition to the uprooting of Gaza’s population.

The Palestinian Authority has issued a statement rejecting any plans for displacement, stating, “We emphasize that the Palestinian people will never abandon their land or their holy sites.”

According to the UN, approximately 1.9 million individuals—over 90% of Gaza’s population—have been displaced since the onset of the conflict between Israel and Hamas in October 2023.

Although a ceasefire was agreed upon on January 15, Israel has accused Hamas of breaching a prisoner swap deal and has halted the return of Gazans to northern Gaza. Both parties have accused one another of violating the ceasefire.

On Saturday, Hamas released four female Israeli soldiers in exchange for 200 Palestinian prisoners, although the Israeli government claimed that Hamas initially promised to release a different hostage.

During its surprise attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, Hamas took around 250 hostages and killed approximately 1,200 individuals. Since then, local authorities report that more than 47,000 Palestinians have died in Gaza.
