During an unexpected appearance at an AfD campaign event this past Saturday, just before the upcoming snap parliamentary elections, Musk encouraged Germans to embrace pride in their culture and values. He stated, “There is too much focus on past guilt. Children should not be guilty of the sins of their parents, let alone their great-grandparents.”
In a response on X on Sunday, Dani Dayan, chairman of Yad Vashem, contended that “the remembrance and acknowledgment of the dark past of the country and its people should be central in shaping German society,” adding that “failing to do so is an insult to the victims of Nazism and a clear danger to the democratic future of Germany.”
Some members of the AfD, both current and former, have made contentious remarks about Germany's Nazi history, though party leaders have defended their stance, claiming the party does not resemble Adolf Hitler's regime.
Musk's endorsement of the AfD was made publicly last December, when he labeled it “the only party that can save Germany” and praised its anti-immigration policies. Earlier this month, he conducted a livestream with AfD co-leader and chancellor candidate Alice Weidel on his X platform, reiterating his support for the party in an op-ed for Die Welt.
Previously, Musk faced backlash when, on the day of U.S. President Donald Trump’s inauguration, he made a gesture that many construed as a Nazi salute. The interpretation received mixed reactions, with some mocking the incident while others found it deeply offensive. Musk attributed the criticism to “radical leftists” and claimed his detractors “can’t stand being mocked.”
To address the controversy, Musk posted a satirical message on X, including references to Nazi figures. He quipped, “Don’t say Hess to Nazi accusations! Some people will Goebbels anything down! Stop Goering your enemies! His pronouns would’ve been He/Himmler! Bet you did nazi that coming.”
The Anti-Defamation League responded to Musk's post, with CEO Jonathan Greenblatt describing it as “inappropriate and offensive.”
