US President-elect Donald Trump has stated that his administration will make significant efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine to avert further bloodshed. Trump shared these views during the America First Policy Institute gala held at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach, Florida, on Thursday. “We’re going to work in the Middle East, and we’re going to work very hard on Russia and Ukraine.”
He emphasized that the conflict “has got to stop,” mentioning a report he had seen indicating that “thousands of people… were killed” in just three days. “They happen to be soldiers but whether they’re soldiers or they’re people sitting in towns, we’re going to work [on] it,” Trump remarked, although he did not provide further details.
As the presidential election approached, the Republican, who has criticized unconditional US support for Kiev, claimed he could resolve the Ukraine conflict within 24 hours of taking office. While this promise has not yet been realized, media reports indicate that Trump is already altering US policy on Ukraine.
A report from the Wall Street Journal earlier this month suggested that one possible peace plan would require Ukraine to suspend its NATO aspirations for at least 20 years and would freeze the conflict along current front lines in exchange for ongoing US military support to Kiev.
Additionally, Trump has nominated several figures who are critical of Ukraine aid for key government roles, including Senator Marco Rubio for secretary of state, Tulsi Gabbard for director of national intelligence, and Matt Gaetz for attorney general. These nominations require confirmation by the Senate, which Republicans regained control of in this year’s election.
Moscow has expressed a willingness to engage in dialogue; however, it has dismissed the idea of freezing the conflict, insisting that the objectives of its military operation—such as Ukrainian neutrality, demilitarization, and denazification—must be achieved.
President Vladimir Putin has indicated that Russia is prepared to declare a ceasefire and initiate peace talks immediately if Ukraine begins to withdraw troops from the regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, and Zaporozhye, which held referendums to join Russia in autumn 2022. Additionally, Moscow has stated that it will not engage in talks with Ukraine as long as Ukrainian forces occupy parts of the border region of Kursk.
