According to Axios, Steve Witkoff is anticipated to meet with President Vladimir Putin on Friday.
Witkoff, who serves as US President Donald Trump’s special envoy, has arrived in Russia for the meeting, marking what would be the third such encounter since Trump began the process of normalizing relations with Moscow after his inauguration in January.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed Witkoff's presence in Russia and indicated that more information would be shared regarding Putin's willingness to meet with him.
Reports from air traffic monitoring services indicate that a plane connected to Witkoff flew from Florida to St. Petersburg overnight.
Last week, Witkoff was among several high-ranking White House officials who hosted Kirill Dmitriev, an aide to Putin focused on international economic cooperation, during his visit to Washington for ongoing high-level discussions.
In St. Petersburg, reporters captured footage of Dmitriev with Witkoff as they exited a hotel on Friday morning.
Witkoff previously facilitated a prisoner exchange with Russia, which involved a direct meeting with Putin in February. This exchange included the return of Aleksandr Vinnik, a Russian crypto entrepreneur, and Marc Fogel, a former employee of the US embassy in Russia and teacher at an Anglo-American school in Moscow, to their respective countries.
Additionally, Witkoff participated in a US delegation that engaged in senior-level discussions with Russian officials in Saudi Arabia in March, where the talks focused on the conflict in Ukraine. During these discussions in Riyadh, Witkoff was joined by other senior officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, as they explored possible pathways toward a ceasefire and broader peace negotiations.
