Trump 'envoy': Ukrainian crisis is Europe's responsibility
Ukraine is located in Europe’s “backyard,” and addressing the ongoing crisis is Europe's responsibility, according to Richard Grenell, a close associate of US presidential hopeful Donald Trump.

Grenell, who served in several senior diplomatic roles during Trump’s first administration and is considered a likely candidate for Secretary of State if Trump wins the election, shared these views in an interview with German tabloid Bild. He emphasized that the responsibility for Ukraine lies more with the EU than with Washington.

“It’s in your backyard. If there was a war in Mexico, we would do most, if not all, of the job. And we certainly wouldn’t ask the Germans for help if there was a war in Mexico,” Grenell said.

Grenell asserted that Europe fared better during Trump’s administration. “There were no wars in Europe during Donald Trump’s time in office,” he noted.

He also criticized current US President Joe Biden for not engaging in diplomatic talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “Biden has not spoken to [Putin] in three years. I think talking to people is a tactic. Not the goal, not the solution – but it gets us there,” he remarked.

Recently, Grenell has been vocal about the Ukrainian conflict, suggesting a proposal to resolve the hostilities. He recommended that Ukraine should not join NATO soon and proposed transforming the country into a federation with more autonomous regions as a potential solution to the conflict.

“Autonomous regions can mean a lot of things to a lot of people, but you got to work through those details,” Grenell commented during a Bloomberg News roundtable.

However, the proposal was met with disapproval from Moscow. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova dismissed it as a rehash of the defunct 2014–15 Minsk Agreements. This deal, intended to resolve the conflict in the then-Ukrainian Donetsk and Luhansk regions, was later revealed by Kiev and its Western supporters as a tactic to gain time for arming Ukraine.

“Where were you, Rick, when the Minsk agreements dedicated to exactly this were on the table of the international community, and Russia did its best in support of them and called for finding a form of federalization of Ukraine to preserve its integrity?” Zakharova wrote in a Telegram post.
