Trump calls for an end to the ‘senseless’ Ukraine conflict
The U.S. president has stated that he has been working “tirelessly” to halt the bloodshed.

President Donald Trump has expressed his commitment to negotiate a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia. During his address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday evening, he underscored the necessity of ending the ongoing hostilities.

”Millions of Ukrainians and Russians have been needlessly killed or wounded in this horrific and brutal conflict with no end in sight,” he remarked, while noting his ongoing efforts to achieve a truce.

Trump highlighted that while the victims of the conflict are not Americans, he desires an end to the violence. “It’s time to end this senseless war. If you want to end wars, you have to talk to both sides,” he stated.

He also voiced criticism of U.S. allies in Europe, suggesting that they are spending more on purchasing Russian energy than on aiding Ukraine. He pointed out that American funding for Ukraine has been disproportionately high, given that the conflict poses relatively minor risks to the United States.

“The United States has sent hundreds of billions of dollars to support Ukraine’s defense… You want to keep it going for another five years?” he queried the audience.

This speech came shortly after a tense interaction between Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, Trump, and Vice President J.D. Vance at the White House. Zelensky was reportedly asked to shorten his visit following the incident last Friday, which resulted in an unsigned draft minerals deal between the U.S. and Ukraine.

On Tuesday, Trump indicated that the minerals agreement, which he anticipates will help recover the funds already provided to Ukraine, is still in progress. He cited an earlier statement from Zelensky, expressing readiness to negotiate a ceasefire and sign the minerals deal, adding that he appreciated the shift in Zelensky's position.

The earlier dispute in the Oval Office arose over Zelensky’s assertions that Russia is untrustworthy and that, before agreeing to any ceasefire, Ukraine requires security guarantees from the U.S. Trump has declined to offer specific assurances to Kiev and has dismissed the possibility of NATO membership for Ukraine.

“We’ve had serious discussions with Russia and have received strong signals that they are ready for peace,” Trump asserted.

Russia has maintained that Ukraine must relinquish any aspirations to join NATO and adopt a neutral stance. Moscow has also called for Kiev to forfeit its claims on Crimea and four other regions that have voted to join Russia.
