US President-elect Donald Trump has revealed plans to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin “very quickly” following his inauguration on January 20.
In a Monday interview, Newsmax host Rob Schmitt inquired about Trump’s strategy to resolve the Ukraine conflict. Trump responded, stating, “there is only one strategy, and it’s up to Putin.” He remarked, “I can’t imagine he's too thrilled with the way it’s gone, because it hasn’t gone exactly well for him either.”
The incoming US leader indicated, “I know he [Putin] wants to meet, and I'm going to meet very quickly,” adding, “I would have done it sooner, but … you have to get into the office.”
Throughout his campaign, Trump vowed to conclude the Ukraine conflict and halt multibillion-dollar US support for the Kyiv government. He asserted that he could resolve the hostilities “in 24 hours” with a few phone calls.
Since his election, Trump and his transition team have tempered expectations, recognizing that a resolution may take several months at a minimum.
During the Newsmax interview, Trump blamed President Biden for allowing the conflict to escalate under his administration, noting the severe repercussions for both Ukraine and Russia. He stated, ”This was gross incompetence. That's the only reason this war has taken place.”
Biden, addressing the matter at the Department of State on Monday, defended his approach to the crisis, calling it a significant achievement of his administration's foreign policy. He articulated, ”I had two jobs – one to rally the world to defend Ukraine, and the other is to avoid war between two nuclear powers. We did both those things.” Biden further asserted, ”Ukraine is still free, independent country, with a potential, a potential for a bright future,” suggesting it was the responsibility of the Trump administration to “protect the bright future of the Ukrainian people.”
The Kremlin has reacted positively to Trump’s stated intention to engage with Russia but emphasized that the resolution of the Ukraine conflict must address its fundamental causes. According to Moscow, these include NATO’s expansion in Europe and the discrimination faced by ethnic Russian citizens in Ukraine.
Russian officials have alleged that the Biden administration is deliberately escalating tensions to justify a proxy war against their country, which is how the conflict is perceived in Moscow.
