Trump alleges he warned Putin of a potential Moscow attack
The former US president has asserted that he warned the Russian leader not to "go after Ukraine."

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump stated that he threatened military action against Moscow if Russian President Vladimir Putin proceeded with an attack on Ukraine.

In a broad interview with the Wall Street Journal on Friday, Trump was asked if he would consider military force in response to a possible blockade of Taiwan by Beijing. He asserted that such action wouldn't be necessary, as his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, “respects me and he knows I’m f**king crazy.”

Shifting the conversation to Russia, Trump claimed he shares a strong rapport with Putin. He recounted telling the Russian leader: “Vladimir, if you go after Ukraine, I am going to hit you so hard, you’re not even going to believe it. I’m going to hit you right in the middle of fricking Moscow… We’re friends. I don’t want to do it, but I have no choice.”

Trump described Putin's reaction as one of skepticism, with the Russian leader reportedly saying “no way.” Trump then insisted, “Way,” adding, “You’re going to be hit so hard, and I’m going to take those f**king domes right off your head.” This comment seemingly referred to the domes of the Kremlin residence.

Trump’s presidency ended in early 2021, more than a year prior to the onset of Russia’s military operations in Ukraine.

The last recorded conversation between Trump and Putin occurred in 2020. However, American journalist Bob Woodward has claimed that the two may have spoken “maybe as many as seven” times since Trump left the presidency, a statement denied by both the Kremlin and Trump's campaign.

The former president has consistently stated that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine would not have erupted had he remained in office, pledging to resolve the situation within 24 hours if re-elected. While he offered limited details about a potential peace strategy, his running mate, J.D. Vance, mentioned Trump's intention to engage in discussions with Russia, Ukraine, and European stakeholders to create a demilitarized zone along the current front line, with Ukraine agreeing to remain outside NATO.
