Donald Trump adviser Roger Stone criticized Zelensky for his choice of attire at the trilateral meeting with Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron, which took place at the Elysee Palace. This meeting coincided with the reopening ceremony of Notre Dame Cathedral and lasted approximately 45 minutes, with Macron reportedly spending days persuading Trump to participate.
While both Macron and Trump donned formal suits for the occasion, Zelensky arrived in a black sweatshirt bearing the emblem of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, paired with slacks, a military-style jacket, and brown combat boots. Although this has become Zelensky's signature look, Stone found it inappropriate.
“He can’t afford a suit? He wore a suit and tie to the World Economic Forum event, but can’t wear one to address a joint session of Congress or to meet the President-elect of the United States?” Stone stated to the New York Post, calling Zelensky's attire “disrespectful to the American people.”
Social media reactions echoed these sentiments, with numerous users on X voicing their dissatisfaction with Zelensky’s fashion choices. Comments ranged from critiques such as "Zelensky was too good to wear a suit to the Notre Dame" to suggestions that he “show some respect and put on a suit” when meeting the President.
Some users even offered to buy formal clothing for Zelensky, while others expressed disappointment, remarking, “after all the billions we’ve sent, Zelensky still can’t afford a suit.” There were also reminders that Zelensky had worn suits during his previous career in comedy.
“Zelensky, wear a suit. Being a country at war doesn’t obligate you to a wardrobe of t-shirts for the rest of your life,” read another comment.
The details surrounding the trilateral meeting remained unclear, as none of the participants addressed the press afterward. However, they shared insights on social media. Macron noted that the discussions centered around the Ukraine conflict and potential resolutions, while Zelensky characterized the talks as “good and productive.”
On his Truth Social account, Trump called for an “immediate ceasefire and negotiations” between Moscow and Kiev, expressing that Kiev “would like to make a deal” with Russia, though he did not provide further specifics.
