The advancement of AI in China: a look into 2024
While much of the Western attention on mobile AI revolves around advancements from Apple and Google, a dynamic and swiftly evolving AI ecosystem has been flourishing in China throughout 2024, largely outside of Apple's constrained ecosystem.

For Chinese smartphone users, AI represents not a distant possibility but an immediate reality. Domestic brands, which assert a much stronger presence in the Chinese market compared to Apple's sub-20 percent share, have successfully integrated numerous AI-driven features into their devices.

The functionalities of AI encompass practical tools for photo editing, such as AI-enabled background removal and content filling, as well as AI writing assistants that generate polished social media posts and auto-transcription services for converting audio recordings into editable text. Far from being specialized novelties, these features have become standard elements in the typical Chinese mobile experience.

In 2024, the Cyberspace Administration of China recorded 210 generative AI services, a significant rise from the 62 that were registered in 2023. Many of these services are seamlessly integrated into popular smartphones, powering virtual assistants like Honor's YOYO, Xiaomi's Xiaoai, and Oppo's AndesGPT.

Numerous mobile applications have also woven in AI capabilities. E-commerce leader Taobao offers AI-enhanced shopping experiences through its "Xingchen" model, the ride-hailing app Didi Chuxing uses AI to optimize routes and improve user experience, and the workplace collaboration tool DingTalk features AI-powered assistants to streamline workflows. These varied applications highlight the deep-seated integration of AI into daily life across China.

Moreover, 2024 has seen the emergence of specialized, industry-targeted AI models that cater to specific needs in fields such as education, healthcare, logistics, telecommunications, and security.

Support from the government has been instrumental in China's rapid progress in AI. The "AI+" initiative, outlined in the 2024 government work report in May and reiterated during December's Central Economic Work Conference, underscores the infusion of AI into various sectors to foster economic growth.
