The supreme leader of the Afghan Taliban, Hibatullah Akhundzada, has enacted a decree that prohibits windows in residential buildings from facing areas where women are typically active. This ruling is part of a broader initiative by the government to enforce Sharia law throughout the nation.
The announcement, shared by Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid on X, details “the manner of placing windows facing neighboring buildings during construction.”
According to the statement, new constructions must not include windows that provide visibility into spaces such as “the courtyard, kitchen, neighbour’s well and other places usually used by women.” The decree further instructs that existing windows with such views should be blocked.
“Seeing women working in kitchens, in courtyards or collecting water from wells can lead to obscene acts,” the document states.
Municipal and relevant authorities will oversee construction sites to ensure adherence to this decree.
The Taliban regained control of Kabul in August 2021 amid the final phases of the US troop withdrawal, after having previously ruled Afghanistan in the 1990s until being removed in 2001 during the US-led invasion.
Despite early assertions of adopting a more moderate approach, the Taliban has since enacted numerous Sharia-compliant restrictions, including a ban on girls’ education beyond sixth grade and prohibitions on women participating in most professions, alongside strict dress codes.
The Taliban government remains unrecognized by the UN but continues to engage diplomatically with several nations, including Russia.
