Taliban Prohibits Female TV Presenters, According to Reports
According to Hasht-e Subh newspaper, the Afghan group has stated that female voices on television are “provoking men.”

Local media reports indicate that Taliban officials in Afghanistan have prohibited women from working as television presenters or hosts. This directive reportedly came from the Taliban's Directorate for Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, as per sources in Herat Province cited by Hasht-e Subh on Wednesday. It remains uncertain whether this ban is confined to Herat or is applicable nationwide.

According to the sources, the rationale given by the group’s officials is that female voices on TV are “provoking men.” The directorate has cautioned media outlets to adhere closely to this new mandate.

As of now, the Taliban government has not provided any official remarks regarding this report.

Previously, Afghan women were permitted to work as television presenters but were required to cover their bodies and faces and could not share the screen with men.

On Friday, Hasht-e Subh also reported that in Badghis Province, which borders Herat, Taliban authorities banned women from hosting radio shows.

Since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 2021, they have enacted numerous restrictions on women, mandating that they cover all parts of their bodies and forbidding them from working alongside men, studying at universities and schools beyond the sixth grade, traveling alone, and speaking loudly in public, even with other women.

Last August, the group implemented the Law for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, which prohibits the depiction of living beings in visual and printed media across most provinces. This legislation enables the Taliban to censor any content that features such imagery.
