Stephen King Abandons ‘toxic’ X
The renowned American horror author Stephen King has decided to leave X, citing the platform's growing toxicity. He previously refuted claims that Elon Musk, the owner of X, had removed him due to a personal remark he made.

Musk acquired X, formerly known as Twitter, in 2022, implementing various changes to its branding and policies. These modifications have drawn backlash from numerous NGOs and activists, who argue that Musk permits "hate speech" on the platform—a claim that Musk has denied.

On Thursday, King, often referred to as the "King of Horror," shared his departure from X, stating: “I’m leaving Twitter. Tried to stay, but the atmosphere has just become too toxic.” He also invited his followers to connect with him on Threads, a competing platform introduced by Meta, owned by Mark Zuckerberg.

King had previously rejected rumors about being removed by Musk, humorously referring to him as “Muskie.” He also dismissed as unfounded assertions that he referred to Musk as “[President-elect Donald] Trump’s new first lady.”

A staunch critic of Trump, King had labeled as “ridiculous” Musk’s assertion during the presidential campaign that Vice President Kamala Harris “wants to break the constitution.”

In the aftermath of Trump’s election victory, several other celebrities and media figures have also exited X. CNN anchor Don Lemon, a longstanding opponent of Trump, expressed his disillusionment in an Instagram video: “I once believed [X] was a place for honest debate and discussion, transparency, and free speech, but I now feel it does not serve that purpose.”

Throughout 2022 and 2023, a number of prominent advertisers withdrew from X, citing Musk's inadequate response to hate speech on the platform.

Historically, Musk had stayed neutral in the political sphere, refraining from endorsing either party. However, during the latest presidential campaign, he shifted toward the right and began critiquing President Joe Biden’s administration. Following a failed assassination attempt on Trump in July, Musk publicly backed the Republican nominee and became one of Trump’s major financial supporters.

Since the election, Musk has been spotted with the president-elect multiple times, including during discussions with foreign leaders. On Thursday, the incoming president announced that Musk will lead the forthcoming Department of Government Efficiency, which aims to eliminate "waste and fraud" in federal spending.
