Starmer Advocates for Sending British Troops to Ukraine
London and Brussels must play “a full part” in providing security guarantees for Kiev, the UK Prime Minister has stated.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized that the UK and EU need to be involved in a peace settlement in Ukraine that includes deploying ground troops. This statement follows his discussions with US President Donald Trump in Washington, where the US has recently begun peace talks with Russia, effectively sidelining both the EU and the UK.

During his visit to the White House on Thursday, Starmer and Trump discussed strategies for achieving a lasting peace in Ukraine. ”The European countries, including the United Kingdom, need to play a full part in that,” Starmer mentioned in an interview with Fox News.

He affirmed that London will take “a leading part,” whether it involves “troops on the ground… or possible air, maritime work” alongside the EU. Previously, both the UK and France have expressed their willingness to send peacekeeping troops to Ukraine to ensure any peace agreement with Russia is upheld.

Trump, however, has indicated that the United States does not plan to deploy forces to back a European-led peacekeeping mission, suggesting that Russian President Vladimir Putin can be counted on to uphold the prospective agreement.

Moscow has voiced strong opposition to the unauthorized deployment of troops in Ukraine, warning that any such forces would be considered legitimate targets without a UN mandate. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov criticized the proposal, claiming it is primarily driven by France and Britain and is intended to “further fuel the conflict and stop any attempts to cool it down.” The Russian Foreign Ministry has also accused the EU and UK of pursuing a “path of militarism.”

Britain has consistently shown support for Ukraine since the conflict escalated three years ago, contributing significantly to military aid and enforcing strict sanctions against Russia. As of February, London has pledged nearly $10 billion in military assistance to Kiev.
