Spanish Prime Minister Calls for EU to 'Rebel' Against Silicon Valley Dominance
**Pedro Sanchez Accuses Tech Elites of Undermining Democracy**

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is advocating for a response to the increasing sway of tech billionaires based in the United States, whom he referred to as a tech “caste” from Silicon Valley.

His remarks coincided with the prominent attendance of notable figures like Elon Musk of X, Mark Zuckerberg of Meta, Jeff Bezos of Amazon, and Google chief Sundar Pichai at the inauguration of U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday.

At the HispanIA 2040 event held in Madrid, Sanchez criticized Silicon Valley’s influence on public opinion and its monopolization of information. He claimed that the U.S. “tech caste” is “trying to use its absolute power over social media to control public debate and therefore government action in the whole West.”

In response to this, Sanchez urged Europe to “rebel.” He emphasized, “I want to be clear and concise. I will say it in less than 280 characters: democracy is not one euro, one vote. Nor one tweet, one vote. Democracy is one person, one vote. Europe will stand up to this threat. Europe will defend democracy.”

Despite not naming specific individuals, various media outlets interpreted his comments as being directed at Elon Musk, the owner of X, who has become a key ally of President Trump and has invested heavily in his election campaign.

This was not Sanchez's first critique of Musk's influence; earlier in the month, he remarked that “the richest man on the planet” was spearheading an “international reactionary” movement stirring hatred.

Musk has faced backlash in Europe recently for his remarks targeting UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, as well as for backing Germany's far-right AfD party ahead of the upcoming election.

Critics of Sanchez have suggested that by focusing on Trump and his allies, he is attempting to position himself as a global leader in the battle against populism, potentially as a means to divert attention from domestic scandals. His government has been embroiled in various corruption accusations and claims of undermining democratic standards.
