According to Yonhap news agency, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol did not respond to a summons from prosecutors on Sunday. They are expected to release another order on Monday, as part of the ongoing inquiry into his short-lived declaration of martial law.
The initial summons was made on Wednesday, requesting Yoon’s presence for questioning at 10 a.m. local time on Sunday, but he failed to appear.
Yoon, along with senior military officials, may face charges related to treason, insurrection, abuse of authority, and hindering citizens' rights.
Yoon was impeached on Saturday, resulting in an automatic suspension from office. The South Korean Constitutional Court now has a period of 180 days to decide whether to uphold or overturn the impeachment. During this time, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo will serve as acting president.
The political turmoil erupted in South Korea on December 3 when Yoon made a surprising televised address, declaring a state of emergency and martial law. He claimed that the opposition, which he accused of being sympathetic to North Korea, was allegedly preparing for a “rebellion.”
In a remarkable show of resistance, 190 lawmakers managed to convene at the National Assembly, despite military barriers, and unanimously voted to rescind the martial law decree just hours later. Additionally, thousands of citizens took to the streets to protest the president’s actions.
Less than six hours after declaring martial law, Yoon announced his decision to retract it.
During a subsequent address, Yoon defended his controversial actions, referring to the martial law declaration as a “highly calibrated political judgment.” He claimed that it was intended to “protect the nation” from the opposition's attempts to hinder governmental operations.
