Initially, Wang was slated to compete against former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova from the Czech Republic; however, Vondrousova withdrew due to a shoulder injury, leading to Rakhimova stepping in as her replacement.
Wang and Rakhimova had met previously in January during the final round of qualifying for the Adelaide International, where Wang secured a win. This time, however, Rakhimova emerged victorious, with a score of 6-3, 6-2 that took one hour and 32 minutes.
The match began with both players exchanging breaks, bringing the score to 2-2 in the first set. Unfortunately for Wang, she lost her rhythm afterward, ultimately conceding the set 6-3.
In the second set, the players again traded breaks early on, leaving them tied at 1-1 before Rakhimova asserted her dominance by winning four consecutive games. Wang managed to stop her opponent's momentum momentarily by holding serve in the seventh game, narrowing the score to 5-2, but Rakhimova comfortably served out the match, clinching the final set 6-2.
Rakhimova will now advance to meet the 10th-seeded Emma Navarro from the USA in the second round.
On the men's side, Buyunchaokete from China was eliminated by Italy's Luciano Darderi, with a score of 7-6, 6-3 in the first round.
During their first-ever encounter, both players maintained their serves throughout the opening set, which reached a 6-6 draw and led to a tiebreaker. Buyunchaokete initially took a 4-2 lead in the tiebreak but lost momentum due to a series of errors, ultimately finishing at 7-4.
In the second set, Darderi broke Buyunchaokete in the opening game. After experiencing discomfort in his right shoulder, Buyunchaokete called for a medical timeout following the third game. While trailing 5-3 in the ninth game, the World No. 73 from China needed to hold serve to stay in the match, managing to reach deuce twice but ultimately unable to prevent Darderi from completing the sweep.
Darderi will next face fifth-seeded Jack Draper from Britain.
